Biography
María Vásquez is a self-portrait fine art photographer born in Peru and currently based in the United Kingdom. Before pursuing photography full-time, María spent over a decade working as a casino croupier across Peru, the United States, and international cruise lines. In 2005, after relocating to Wales, she began focusing on her passion for photography. She studied film photography at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and later expanded her practice to digital photography, initially photographing her own children. Following personal upheavals in 2013, including a divorce and the loss of her father, María found in self-portraiture a powerful outlet for expression and healing. Her work is deeply autobiographical, exploring the female form and the complex spectrum of sensuality, identity, and emotion. By positioning herself as both photographer and muse, María challenges societal taboos around female sexuality and reclaims agency through her images. She blends reality and fantasy in a visual language that is at once intimate, bold, and poetic. María's photography is a celebration of womanhood - embracing vulnerability, strength, and freedom. Through her lens, she creates a world without limits or rules, where self-expression becomes an act of empowerment.
